It made me sad to read that the last female white rhino was killed by poachers yesterday. It speaks so much of how inhumane humans could be, of human arrogance, of how we think the world is ours for the taking.
What bothers me most is that this rhino, being one of the last living ones of her kind, was killed in the reservation—in the dead of the night no less. It means the perpetrators are fully aware that what they’re doing is wrong, and yet they plunged on with their brutal plan. She was tranquilized while the poachers were in a chopper, then hacked off her horn, and left her to bleed to death.
I hope in my own way I helped raise awareness, that this is what we have sunk down to: robbers who sneak around in the dark, killing a defenseless creature for a horn that wasn’t meant for our use.
